2040 Regional Transportation Plan

SEMCOG introduced the 2040 Regional Transportation Plan in June 2013 in efforts to spend about $36 billion revenue on transportation in alignment with the long-term transportation plan. The goals of this plan include reliability in the transportation in SouthEast Michigan, and also the accessibility to common and desirable destinations [1].

Projects included in this plan are improvements as well as new projects to increase efficiency and sustainablility. Improvements include: bettering the conditions of roads and bridges, lowering vehicle counts, increasing the accuracy and amount of data collected in regards to safety, ridership, demographics, and travel patterns [1].

One example of a project that has been discussed out of this plan is creating an Ann Arbor to Detroit commuter rail service. Many people who work in Detroit, live in Ann Arbor (the neighboring county), and having a commuter rail would provide a sustainable and affordable option for these residents and employees. This project was project to begin in 2013, and since then has been contracted with Great Lakes Central Railroad, to get more cars in Spring 2015 [2]. This refurbishment will also help comply with ADA regulations, by adding aids for the hearing impaired [2].

Improvements to road conditions will seriously improve the safety and happiness of those who live in and around Detroit. In Fig. 1 we can see that in 2012 less than 15% of roads were considered “good”, while 55% was classified as “fair” and 30% of roads are in poor condition [1]. The call for better roads will reduce the amount of accidents there are, as well as improve conditions for those who take alternative modes of transportation such as cycling.
